Nomenclature notes: According to Stevenson & Sabato (in Taxon 35:582. 1986, the epithet is based on Dioon strobilosum Lemaire (Ill. hortic. 10: misc. 4. 1863) which is cited in full synonymy. However, D. strobilosum Lem. was invalidly published as a provisional name, because even though a description is given, Lemaire questions whether it is a new species. Thus, valid publication of the name commences with de Candolle.
